Service Description

Prerequisite: foundational pottery skills (throwing, trimming, slipping and scoring parts to attach) Event Details: ● Date: Saturday and Sunday, March 7 - 8 ● Time: 10 AM - 5 PM each day ● Location: Clay Space Studio - East Wing This two-day workshop will cover the particulars of teapot design and craft for exceptional functionality in steeping and serving loose-leaf tea. Through the showing of examples, the serving of a tea, and the demonstration of throwing, trimming and assembling clay components, Jonathan will share the intricacies of what makes a teapot work gracefully and how to control these details in the making. Workshop participants must have the foundational pottery skills (throwing, trimming, slipping and scoring parts to attach) already in place to jump right in! Students will have time in the workshop to put the covered techniques into practice, and should expect to take these new ideas further into their own practice to hone the teapot form slowly. A potluck lunch will occur on each workshop day! Artist Bio Jonathan Steele has been making pottery since 2009, firing wood kilns since 2012 and has been honing the nuances of crafting teaware since 2016. Jonathan holds an MFA from Oregon College of Art and Craft and has completed residencies at Pleasant Hill Pottery in Oregon and Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Shigaraki, Japan. He has found the outlet for his work to be primarily in the tea community, regional tea festivals in the Northwest, and shops and galleries more broadly. His personal studio is in Redmond, WA. Class cost - $250 Clay packages (clay, glazes and firings) start at $50 and are available for purchase. *Discounts cannot be applied to this workshop
