Expectations & Code of Conduct

❖ Respect other people

  • We respect people of any nationality, color, gender, sexual orientation or any other way they are different from ourselves. Insults or other aggressive behaviors are not acceptable.

  • Personal appearance and clothing should not give offense to others.

  • Aggressive or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated at any time or under any circumstances. Clay Space reserves the right to address this type of behavior as they deem appropriate.

❖ If you are unsure about any process or piece of the puzzle – ASK the studio monitor, a studio tech, or another member before you do anything

  • Make sure you know what stage your piece is at and in which location it belongs. Putting a piece in the wrong location can have dire consequences for your piece and for the pieces of others.

  • There are hazards within the studio that may cause serious injury, do not approach or touch any kiln.

  • We use cookies (small slabs of clay that are fired under your pieces during the glaze firing) for those pieces that have more than one glaze. If your piece has a foot larger than 5” or is not round, please provide your own cookie – best made as you make the piece.

❖ Leave the space cleaner than you found it

  • Clean up your workspace after you have completed your work

  • Clean up the floor and walls around your workspace

  • Clean up the common areas you have worked in

  • Do some other small clean up, to help with overall studio cleanliness

  • Members are required to do two hours per month work for the studio

❖ Do not touch other people's work without permission

  • We encourage looking and asking about another person’s piece

  • Do not bump or pick up others people’s ‘to be bisqued’ ware, these are very fragile

  • If the artist is not available and their work is in your way, please ask a staff member to help

  • If there is no room on the shelf for your work, ask a staff member if they can make some room.

  • Do not move pieces that do not belong to you.

❖ Move your pieces through the process in a timely manner

  • Each member has one shelf for works in progress. Each piece on that shelf should have a date.

  • There is a two month limit on bisque ware shelves, please collect your bisque ware

  • Fired pieces will be discarded or become property of Clay Space after three months

❖ Keep the Glaze area clean

  • Do not contaminate glaze buckets, first layer of glaze should be dry before adding second glaze

  • Tools for mixing glazes should be cleaned and returned to their proper location after use

  • Glaze buckets should be wiped down after use (i.e. lids and sides)

  • Do not adjust thickness of glazes, talk to staff or leave a note if you feel glaze is not correct

  • If a piece breaks within the glaze bucket, please contact staff

❖ Be willing to help new students/members as needed

  • Share tips and techniques when others ask it of you

  • Give guidance for clean up, where things belong and studio etiquette as feels appropriate

❖ Members may bring in a non-member for a quick tour or to pick up or check on pieces.

  • Visitors are not allowed to be in the studio for the duration that the student/member is actively working in the studio. A day-pass may be purchased for the visitor, however the member must speak to a Clay Space representative about how/what the visitor will be doing prior to any activity by the visitor. The member assumes responsibility for the visitor and their actions.
