Studio Policies & Procedures
Working in a group-use communal clay studio, cleanliness and silica abatement is a top priority. We must protect our lungs and stay on top of preventing harmful airborne dust, while maintaining a welcoming space for all to enjoy.
Studio User Requirements
-
Clean up each of their workstations in a thorough manner, using wet clean up methods only - sponges & mops, NO SWEEPING!
-
Wheels, shelves, wall, stool, tables etc. get thoroughly wiped down with a sponge and bucket of clean water.
-
All tools, buckets, splash pans can get wiped down in a water bucket and must be rid of clay in the pre-rinse bucket before taking them to the sink for a final rinse.
-
Handbuilding/wedging tables should be sponged down after use and a wet mop used under and around the table.
-
Be mindful of your time in the studio, accommodate enough time at the end of class or reservation to be completely cleaned up by the end of your allotted studio time.
-
All greenware (unfired clay) is stored on the appropriately designated shelves for students/members/10 pack users and must be labeled with a name and date.
-
Minimize the amount of work being stored on bats. Clean and return bats efficiently. Do not use bats to store work that is trimmed and drying.
-
A shared locker is provided for current students, a full locker for members and the options to rent additional shelf storage for greenware and/or a cubby with a cart for the tool enthusiast to tote their clay and tools to their workstation. Bone dry work (pieces that have dried to completion) get moved to the kiln room and placed on the designated cart for bisque firing (the first firing process).
-
Bisqued work will get unloaded onto the most recently fired shelves. Check these shelves and retrieve your work in a timely manner as this work will only be kept on the shelves for a maximum of 3 months.
-
Once retrieved, your bisque fired work should be stored in your locker or on your greenware shelf until you are given instruction on glazing at Clay Space.
-
If instruction has already been given, then you may proceed with your glazing when ready. Once your work has been glazed, it should be moved to the to-be-glaze-fired shelves in the kiln room. Work will get loaded and fired in the gas reduction kiln by the studio technicians.
-
The dates for firing and unloading the gas reduction kiln are typically noted on a whiteboard in the glaze area. You can plan on picking up your finished work AFTER the kiln has been fully unloaded. Please pick up your work in a timely manner. Unclaimed work will be held for two months and then discarded.
-
You are required to utilize the online reservation system for both scheduling times to make work outside of class and to glaze.
-
The table located in the main studio between the pre-rinse bucket and the glaze counter under the windows is available for students to glaze during their class time, all glazing outside of class time requires a glazing specific studio reservation.
At the end of a class session, students not signed up for a consecutive class:
-
Must strive to finish work to completion, empty your greenware board, empty your locker by the Saturday following the last class and retrieve all finished work in a timely manner.
-
If you have pieces only needing to be glazed you can come into the studio within the two weeks following the class to glaze ONLY. If you have pieces that are still being worked on, are leatherhard and drying slower or needing to be trimmed you must purchase a day pass to come in to use the studio to finish working on them.
If you are registered for the following class session:
-
In progress work can carry over, and you can keep your belongings in your locker. You should remove work from the greenware board unless you are taking the same class.
It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the ceramic process, these policies and procedures and to ask questions of staff or your instructor if you are uncertain. With your help, Clay Space can continue to be the welcoming Community Studio that we can all enjoy and be proud of being a part of.
