A 2-Part workshop - Part One is required to attend Part 2 Spirit of Raku: Transformation by Fire Fire transforms. It transforms clays and glazes, and it can also help transform our thoughts, memories, hopes, and intentions. Spirit of Raku is a unique workshop that combines the dramatic process of Raku firing with personal reflection, creating space to honor loved ones, releasing grief, celebrating change, or giving form to dreams for the future. Part One: Intention & Design Martha Pitts & Dara Rosenwasser 90 minutes | October 29, 2026 Thursday 6PM-7:30PM Location: East Wing Learn about the history and traditions of Raku, explore the theme of transformation through fire, and develop the intention behind your work. We'll discuss forms, glazing possibilities, firing considerations, and ways to incorporate personal meaning into your pieces. Part Two: The Spirit of Fire 4 Hours | January 24, 2027 Sunday 12PM - 4PM Gather for a communal Raku firing experience. As pots move through fire and smoke, participants will be invited to reflect on the intentions they bring to the process. During reduction, you may choose to place a written message into the fire to honor, remember, release, celebrate, or envision what lies ahead. Raku firing is an exciting, unpredictable, and organic pottery firing process. The group nature of the process and the volatility and surprising results of Raku make for unusual and imperfect results. While the experimental nature of Raku and working directly with fire and hot pots pose some risks to the pottery (be aware if you bring your most prized pots), the results can be stunning. So that you can maximize the number of pieces fired, we suggest that each participant prioritize your pots and we will get through as many as we can. We recommend bringing 4 priority bisqued pots and 4 backup pots. Appropriate attire, safety equipment, and signing the Raku waiver are required for participation. -Experience the transformative power of fire as both artistic process and personal ritual -Learn how fire, smoke, and reduction create distinctive Raku surfaces -Design work that reflects a personal intention -Participate in a communal firing experience -Honor a loved one, mark a life transition, release grief, or celebrate hopes and dreams -Explore the history and traditions of Raku pottery Clay can be purchased at the studio (discounted Raku clay) starting at $50 for a 25 lb bag. *Discounts cannot be applied to this workshop.

Cancellation Policy
Clay space reserves the right to cancel any workshop or class for good cause, including but not limited to: lack of sign-ups, illness of instructor, extreme weather conditions, etc. If a class or workshop is cancelled by Clay Space, we will refund payment. We offer full refunds for cancellations made more than 10 days out from a class or workshop and 50% refunds made between 5 and 10 days before a class or workshop. There are no refunds for cancellations made within 5 days of a class or workshop. All refunds are for the designated amount minus the services fee charged to us. To cancel your class or workshop reservation, please email us at office@clayspaceeugene.org to receive a refund.
