In three consecutive Sunday afternoons, this class will show you how to make a closed circle or donut shape on the potter’s wheel and how to modify it to make a functional and decorative piece of art. Feel confident making closed form circle/donut shape, learn the basics of when to trim it, add a base, openings, and other embellishments. Learn about proper drying to try to ensure the final piece doesn’t crack or warp. Day 1 – Cathy will demonstrate making the closed form circle on the wheel. Trimming of a leather hard piece will be also shown. Various examples of what can be done with this shape will be available to look at and discuss. Students will practice making their own forms on the wheel. Each student will be given a leather-hard “mini” circle to work on during the week. Students will receive handouts with links to other potters’ demos, samples of forms, and related articles. Day 2 – Cathy will demonstrate trimming and modifying of leather-hard pieces. Ideas for bases, openings, and other features will be explored. Design features will be discussed, and students will play with their own pieces (created the week before) to make unique vases and other items from their circles. Methods for supporting the structures to prevent tilting will be explained. Day 3 – Students will continue to work on finishing their pieces to get them ready to dry completely and bisque fire. Glazing techniques will be demonstrated. Students can glaze their pieces if they have been bisque fired. Students will be given a one day pass to use after the workshop is over to complete the glazing of their piece. End of day 3 will include students sharing their work with the class.
